Now that the holidays have come and gone, you may feel a little overwhelmed and like you are buried in clutter. Don’t fret … this is normal. But, it doesn’t mean you must live like this. In just one day, you can transform your home into an organized, clutter-free sanctuary. Here are several ways you can declutter your home in just one day.
Set a Timer
You may feel overwhelmed with this project and that’s okay. To help you get started and not feel so much pressure, break the task up into smaller chunks. You can do this by setting a timer. Set the timer for 30 minutes or even one hour at a time. Then, when the timer goes off, give yourself a 15 to 30 minute break and then start the timer again and get back to work. By doing this, if you begin to feel stressed, just focus on working until the timer goes off and the project will seem less daunting.
Create Three Piles
Rather than just throw everything you don’t want away or donate it, create three separate piles — one for trash, donations, and to sell. This will help you stay organized as you declutter and it will help you feel better about getting rid of items you may not use every day or that you don’t need. Plus, by selling many of your older items, you can make a little extra money.
Give Every Item a Home
Every item in your house should have a designated storage place. This will help keep clutter to a minimum and prevent you from moving piles around your home. If you have these types of piles — particularly when it comes to paper piles — focus on these areas first. By simply eliminating these areas of your home, you will already feel much more organized and free from clutter.
Make it a Family Event
Don’t try to declutter everything on your own. Enlist the help of all your family members. Ask each family member to go through their own closets, drawers, etc. If you have younger children, you can ask them to give you five toys that they don’t play with anymore and that they would like to give away. The more people you have helping you, the faster this project will go and the more area you can cover in such a short period of time.
Decluttering not only makes your home more welcoming and comfortable, but for potential buyers and for guests, it appears more impressive, larger, and in better condition.
