The outside of a house is just as essential as the inside, and it should be thoroughly examined before purchasing a home. In order to ensure transparency and fairness are prevalent in one’s home buying dealings, any potential issues must be addressed. With the help of professionals, this process can go a long way in ensuring one’s satisfaction with their potential purchase.

Roof

As the foremost protection against the elements, the roof is perhaps the most important element to check. All shingles need to be looked at for signs of damage like loosening, curling, and warping, which specialists can also do. Shingle granules also need to be inspected for signs of compromise and wear and protective flashing for areas like the chimney, which can rust and otherwise deteriorate. This then ensures any leakage issues are caught. This essential home feature must be in good shape for sound protection and insulation before one considers moving in.

Downspouts and Gutters

The gutter system must be in proper condition in order to avoid water damage to a home. An inspection will show if maintenance has been carried out regularly, including clearing any clogs from debris and ensuring the system is secured to the roof and walls with no gapping or loose parts. As a rule, the system should be confirmed as siphoning water away from home at a minimum of five feet. These aspects are necessary to prevent foundational damage and destructive leaking into areas like the basement.

Trimming

Doors and windows need to be looked at, especially regarding their trimming. Wooden trimming is at the most risk of damage and rotting, especially if a gutter system has been compromised. If issues are found, this may necessitate replacement with materials like vinyl by the current owners before being able to sell.

Siding

The siding on exterior walls, also integral to insulation, first needs to be viewed for signs of paint damage. Any cracking and similar damage indicate improper protection against natural weather, precipitation, and pests. Areas that show signs of dramatic warping or bulging are especially worrisome. They often lead inspectors to find damage further into the structure of a home, even as far as the interior at times.
